6" x 6" Oil on gallery-wrapped canvas, with 23 karat genuine gold leaf, unframed, 2019
I created this painting by using my palette knife to mix spoonfuls of wax medium into my smooth, luxurious oil paint. This waxy mix of oil paint felt like frosting a blue cake as I swept thick, buttery dollops of over my canvas in the shape of a wave.
My memories of surfing are gratifying and electrifying, and I honor them by painting about the ocean--my love--the place where I feel most at home.
I approached the creation of this peace by making it as sensual as possible. The thick paint speaks to the senses and creates a bright sensation in the mind and on the palette.
This glowing ocean wave stands tall, and somewhat motionless, as if caught in time. Her blessed crest holds gold upon her chest. Streaks of manganese blue appear unplanned as they wash over the canvas and create layers and depth as ancient as time.
The peak of the wave sweeps in thick, buttery swipes from my palette knife, and the eye is drawn in swoops toward the confident, radiant face of the wave.
